The Salt Box Specialty Market is a new shop in Bonavista, Newfoundland owned by Paul Babineau and Caleb Becker. While it might be the smallest fish market you’ve stepped into (not more than 150 square feet!), the freshness, quality and its welcoming “tiny” charm will not disappoint.
Whether you want a pound of mussels, fresh caught crab legs, cod, scallops or shrimp, the Salt Box Market is the place to go. With the recent increase in tourists and visitors to Bonavista, the Salt Box Market is a welcome addition to this outport community.
The space itself is an exciting new take on the quintessential Newfoundland shed. Sheds or “stores” as they are referred to on the island have long been important places for socializing and gathering, as well as a defining feature of the Newfoundland landscape. As Bonavista’s economy shifts from predominately fish production to a more diverse and local economy, the Salt Box Market is a an example of the “re-imagining” of historic buildings, businesses and industry that is taking place in this small community.
