As part of a key initiative to promote growth in the arts sector of Gjoa Haven, the Nattilik Heritage Society (NHS) leads the social, cultural and economic development of Inuit art. Opened in 2013, the centre is investing in workshops that provide mentorship programs in sewing, appliqué needlework, carving and various crafts, NHS provides preservation of cultural heritage and skills, while ensuring economic self-sufficiency and sustainability of community members.
With the goal to limit the gap between artisans and consumers, all revenue accumulated from Ullulaq Inuit Arts retail/wholesale business is returned to the community with net proceeds from sales shared with artisans and further invested in civic infrastructure of Gjoa Haven.
